Thank you for writing this, I am the exact opposite: very creative but almost dyslexic with numbers (I confess I need a calculator to sum up easy operations, oops)
Your article reminded me of Carol S. Dweck's book, "Mindset, The Psychology of Success".
She explains that if we grow up with a "fixed" mindset, we tend to expect ourselves to be good at something the first time we try it, and we get frustrated if we fail immediately.
Whereas, with a "growth" mindset, you can basically learn anything. You just need to give it time, and consistent efforts. Technically speaking that means I could still learn maths properly, but I think at this point I'm too deep into the social sciences to do that... :))
I actually think I started as the exact opposite. Was called "The Human Calculator," but clearly lacked in the artistic and creative department for a long time.
It's an absolutely great principle and I have frequently noticed that I take a long time to improve at things, but if I stick with it, I get really good. I will add the book to a list of ones to look at getting soon!
As someone in finance, there are many people that can't do their maths around me, that's why we are here (and calculators)! :)

I can't wait to see your future work! I also come from an engineering background that was heavy math and framework focused. Creativity never come natural to me, but then again, maybe its just a matter of exercising that muscle a bit more :)

It's been an uphill battle, one that I neglected fighting due to basically "writing myself off" that I didn't have real creativity. I feel you on the math and framework front, but look at us now! I'm excited to start expanding into other mediums, it's honestly what has really pushed me forward this year.
Hope y'all had a great Memorial Day weekend too! It was a great shower and weekend altogether (although I sadly missed the BBQ outing in Austin). Terry Blacks off Barton Springs was a favorite of mine and many of us in college. That and Franklins when I got the rare chance to go.

At a certain point, it's just trying to find our own ways to add humor and our own special touch to the way we do things. I've definitely learned a lot over the last 1.5+ years on ways I can bring that out of myself to share with everyone.

Ironically, though, I think my parents actually boxed me into that area, cause I did have a creative side growing up (writing raps, drawing, short stories, etc). Substack has been a great way to start diving more into that side as an adult (along with the career change to tech sales).
Really excited to see what you got going on with YouTube and TikTok! Sounds super fun, and learning by doing is the best way to do it!

Excited too! May was the busiest month ever for Kylen & I, so I’m really excited to get some time for more creativity in June and to begin the new forms of content!
For me the biggest revelation came when i’ve come to accept the fact that creativity is not only writing, painting etc. Creativity is being able to put the right people on the right tasks. Creativity is changing processes in your department for increased efficiency. Creativity is when you have your kid in the car without their toys and you need to entertain the entire way. Creativity is everywhere, even in numbers, we just have another names for it :)
I love it and I received a similar text response to this post too. We are trained to think creativity is only tied to “arts” which is far too limiting.
We are all creators in our own unique sense. It’s one of the best journeys of our life to discover the ways that we are creative.
Wishing you much creativity, especially in finding entertainment for your kid without toys😂
Thank you for this piece Chase. Creativity is a practice, not a feeling. You proved this by building a system (52 interviews, consistent formats) that forced you to get better. I appreciate you sharing how you force yourself to be creative by trying and exploring new themes. We don't grow if we don't try. I write about the discipline that separates entrepreneurs who are builders from people still hoping.
Thank you for reading it Olammide! It really is and I think for a long time I didn't understand how to practice it. As time goes on, continuing to do things that challenge me to create new and unique outputs has been a major reward. It's consistency and discipline over time that helps us find the talent we have hiding beneath the surface!
‘My art projects were not easy on the eye. ‘ had me😂😂 cliche as it sounds I truly believe that everyone of us is inherently creative, but as you point out - some of us have to dig a little deeper to connect to it. I grew up in a very engineering focused household and creativity was always a bit.. looked down on (sadly). So it took me time too. But the fulfillment in actually creating something is next level! Curious about your book plan!
Trust me if you saw some of them, you'd understand the grades I got in art class😂
If some people have to dig deep, then I had to dig a whole bunker! But it sure is rewarding now, finding whatever creatively I possessed deep down.
That is sad that it was looked down upon, but I'm glad you found it and are embracing it now. Definitely want to foster creativity with our future kids, it's so fulfilling (and important to find what makes us inherently creative)!
I want to turn my Year of Sunday Spirit series from last year into a book, but I've also really enjoyed my work from this year. My posts this year alone are nearing ~200 pages worth of book content, so there's definitely an opportunity to begin trying with either. Likely after the wedding festivities in September!
